Welcoming a new little one into the world is an incredible, beautiful whirlwind. Those first few weeks pass by in a warm blur of tiny toes, quiet snuggles, and precious sleepy sighs. A newborn photo shoot is a wonderful way to freeze those fleeting moments in time, but if you've never done one before, you might wonder how to prepare.
Here is a simple guide on what to expect during your session and how to make the experience smooth, cozy, and memorable for everyone!
1. Aim for the First 2 to 3 Weeks
The absolute best time for a newborn photo shoot is within the first 2 to 3 weeks of life. During this sweet spot, babies are naturally sleepier, more flexible, and love curling up into those womb-like poses. As they get older, they become much more alert and stretch out, making those curled-up, sleepy portraits a bit harder to capture!
2. Give Yourself Time (At Least 2 Hours)
Newborn sessions run on "baby time." We work completely around your baby's rhythm, which means we will pause as often as needed for extra feeding, diaper changes, burping, or simply extra cuddles. Expect the session to last at least 2 hours. There is zero rush, so relax and take a breath—patience is a huge part of the magic!
3. Feed Baby Right Before You Arrive
A full tummy equals a sleepy, comfortable baby. Plan to give your little one a good feed right before heading out or immediately upon arriving at the studio. That extra bit of milk helps settle them into that deep, peaceful sleep that allows for those sweet, classic newborn poses.
4. Dress Baby in an Easy On/Off Outfit
When you first arrive, we will often transition baby out of their clothes and into wraps or simple setups. Dressing them in a simple outfit that zips or buttons up the front—nothing that needs to be pulled over their head—makes it much easier to undress them gently without waking them up.
• Bringing a special outfit? If you have a specific outfit you’d love baby to wear in photos, bring it along! Just ensure it fits snuggly, as overly loose clothes can sometimes hide tiny details.
5. Dress Warm and Lightly (For Mom & Dad!)
To keep your baby comfortable, calm, and cozy while swaddled or unswaddled, the studio room is kept intentionally warm. We recommend dressing yourselves in light, breathable layers so you stay comfortable while we capture those gorgeous images.
6. Pack a Pacifier (Even If They Rarely Use It)
If your baby takes a pacifier, please bring it along! Even if they only use it occasionally, a pacifier is a fantastic soothing tool to help calm baby between poses without interrupting their sleepy vibe.
7. Bring Small, Meaningful Keepsakes
Personal touches make your photos uniquely yours. Feel free to bring along a small, special item you'd like featured—such as an heirloom rattle, a personalized name sign, a handmade knit blanket, or a family keepsake.
8. Step Into the Frame: Mom and Dad Count Too!
It is completely normal to feel exhausted during these early newborn days, but please make sure mom and dad get in at least a few shots. You don't need fancy attire—simple, neutral clothing and a gentle embrace are all it takes. These early days pass by so quickly, and years from now, these photos will be precious treasures showing just how deeply you loved your baby right from the start.
A Quick Reminder: Your only job during the session is to relax. We take care of the safety, posing, and comforting so you can sit back, enjoy a quiet moment, and watch your baby's very first portrait session unfold.
